Ron Hubbard ALL RIGHTS RESERVED The Church of Scientology of Texas-a non~proflt organization Dianetics~ and Scientotogye are registered names, In our last issue, the Sun explored claims by Transcendental Meditation that its followers had achieved a state of consciousness which enabled them to levitate and in some cases to become invisible. Though claims of super.normal abilities are long familiar to Indian culture, they are new to the Occident. Therefore, we thought an eastern physicist might give insight into the scientific possibilities for these claims. Dr. E. C. G. Sudarshan, a native of India, is a physics professor at the Uni- versity of Texas at Austin and Director of the Center for Particle Theory. His specializations include elementary parti- cle physics, quantum optics, quantum field theory, classical mechanics, and the foundations of physics. Aside from his professional degrees, he holds several honorary degrees and last year was decorated by the President of India with the Padma Bhushan or membership in the Order of the Lotus, the highest honor which can be paid to an Indian citizen by that government. Because of Dr. Sudarshan's familiarity with physics, eastern meditation prac- tice, and TM in particular, I thought his remarks on the seemingly impossible claims for invisibility and levitation would be illuminating. At the beginning of the interview Dr. Sudarshan stressed the difference between levitation and movement in the air, the first involving floating like a balloon, while the latter includes springing into the air with a burst of energy, movement which could be originated muscularly. He pointed out that although shooting up into the air was certainly unusua~ it did not necessarily defy any existing laws of physics in the way that levitation would seem to do. -- Diana Potts DR. SUDARSHAN: I have not ever floated in the air physically. I have never seen anyone actually float in the air. What I have seen are video tapes of people jumping in the air from the lotus position. They suddenly jump up, and it's not a short distance, not one or two inches but almost all the way up to the ceiling. From this very stable position, there is simply no way of jumping up. Try it sometime. Even from the more elementary positions it is very difficult to jump up without a tremendous amount of force. SUN: Is the meditation they do when they "jump up" the same one that initiates learn at the beginning? DR. SUDARSHAN: No. This is a medi- tation of a specific kind, called Samyama, and it is a particular level of dealing with your consciousness in that you have three components. These are standard techni- ~1 things, very much like ,First your mind is focu particular concept. Then idea of consciousness frees the exclusion of ever third this flips you over from~ another one.
